Guide to How to Install a Car Lift

Published: April 21, 2025

Installing a car lift in your garage or auto shop can significantly increase your working space, productivity, and efficiency. However, the installation process must be done with precision and safety in mind. This comprehensive guide walks you through the steps for installing a 2-post or 4-post car lift correctly and safely.

1. Choose the Right Location

Before installing your lift, evaluate the area for proper ceiling height, concrete strength, and working clearance. Ideally, you need:

  • Ceiling height: At least 11 feet for most 2-post lifts
  • Concrete: Minimum 4-inch thickness at 3,000 PSI strength
  • Space: Enough clearance on all sides for lifting and moving around vehicles

2. Tools and Materials You’ll Need

  • Torque wrench
  • Hammer drill with masonry bits
  • Socket set
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Chalk line
  • Hydraulic fluid (check manufacturer specs)
  • Anchor bolts (included with most lifts)

3. Unpack and Inspect All Parts

Once the lift arrives, open all packages and lay out the parts according to the manual. Check for shipping damage or missing components. Do not proceed if anything appears damaged or incomplete—contact the supplier immediately.

4. Mark the Installation Area

Use a chalk line to outline the lift’s post locations based on the installation manual. Measure and re-check all distances between the columns, making sure they are square and level.

5. Drill Anchor Holes

Using a hammer drill, bore holes into the concrete where the columns will be bolted. Ensure the holes are the correct depth and width for the anchor bolts. Clean the holes of dust before inserting the anchors.

6. Set the Columns

Carefully raise each column and position them on the marked spots. Use a level to ensure they are plumb. Secure the columns by inserting and tightening the anchor bolts to the specified torque setting provided by the lift manufacturer.

7. Install the Crossbeam or Overhead Bar (if applicable)

For overhead-style 2-post lifts, connect the top beam between the columns. Use a ladder and assistance from a second person or lift device. Make sure it is level and bolted securely.

8. Attach the Lift Arms and Safety Locks

Attach the lift arms to each column and verify proper movement. Also install any safety locking mechanisms, including locking pins and arm restraints, as directed in the manual.

9. Route the Hydraulic and Electrical Systems

Connect the hydraulic hoses between the columns and the power unit. Then, wire the power unit according to the voltage rating (commonly 220V single-phase). Ensure a qualified electrician handles this step if you're not experienced with electrical work.

10. Fill with Hydraulic Fluid

Add the recommended type and quantity of hydraulic fluid to the reservoir. Once filled, power on the unit and raise the lift slowly while checking for leaks and pressure issues.

11. Test the Lift

  • Lift a vehicle partially and check for balance
  • Test all safety locks and release functions
  • Check the lift arms for correct engagement with vehicle lifting points
  • Lower and raise the lift several times to confirm smooth operation

12. Final Inspection and Certification

Perform a full inspection according to the manufacturer's checklist. It’s highly recommended to have the lift certified by a professional installer or technician, especially in commercial settings.

Tips for Safe Installation

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s manual closely
  • Don’t modify parts or hardware unless advised
  • Ensure your concrete meets the requirements—never install on asphalt or soft ground
  • Secure all fasteners to the required torque settings
  • Double-check electrical and hydraulic connections before use
